Best Pet Insurance Companies of 2022
Anyone who has taken a sick or injured pet to the vet knows how expensive veterinary care can be. It's in those situations where having a financial safety net to refer back to is very helpful. It is also in those situations when you do not have to choose between the health of your pet and the financial well-being of your family.
As a relatively new form of insurance, first policy issued in 1982, pet insurance is not as well understood as other types such as homeowners, renters or life insurance. In our unbiased ranking of the best pet insurance companies for 2022, we aim to help you choose the best insurance company for your pet and shine a light on pet insurance by looking at what it does and doesn't cover as well as the factors that will affect the price of a policy for your pet

Spot Insurance:
Spot Pet Insurance offers two types of policies for cats and dogs, one for accidents and one that provides coverage for both accidents and illness. These policies come with annual deductions that must be met before you will be reimbursed for expenses. Annual coverage limits also apply, although when you create your policy, you will have the option to select unlimited annual coverage. Another advantage is that exam fees for specific terms are covered by Spot's policies. This is an additional fee with some providers in our ratings.
The potential downside is that when submitting claims, you will need to fill out claims forms. There are other companies in our ranking where you can just take a snapshot of your paid bill and send it through a mobile app.
The policies sold by Spot are issued by Crum & Forster Insurance and underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company.
Lemonade Insurance:
Lemonade provides pet accident and sickness insurance policies for cats and dogs. It also offers a number of options to add to its standard policies, including three different health plans and reimbursement for veterinary tests for covered conditions.
For dog and cat sample policies, Lemonade is the least expensive company in our ranking. The two-day waiting period for incidents correlates with Embrace as the shortest waiting period among the companies in our ranking.
One of the downsides to Lemonade is that it is not available everywhere. There are 15 states where you cannot get pet insurance policies.
Trupanion Insurance:
Trupanion Insurance provides accident and sickness coverage for cats and dogs. This plan includes coverage for congenital and breed-specific conditions as long as there were no symptoms before coverage began or while the policy was waiting. Trupanion's five-day accident waiting period is shorter than most of the other companies in our ranking, but the 30-day illness waiting period is twice as long.
One of Trupanion's notable features is its lack of coverage limits. This means that for the covered conditions, you won't have to worry about reaching any kind of limit for costly care. The downside is that Trupanion does not reimburse you for a veterinary examination fee, even for the covered conditions.
Trupanion policies are insured by the American Pet Insurance Company (APIC).
Embrace Insurance:
Embrace policies provide coverage for accidents and illnesses affecting cats and dogs. The company also offers an option at an extra cost called Wellness Rewards that provides up to $650 in reimbursement for preventive care, including dental cleanings, manicures, and vaccinations. Wellness Rewards is not an insurance or rider policy. Alternatively, Embrace stands for "budgeting tool".
The two-day waiting period for incidents correlates with Lemonade as the shortest waiting period of all companies in our ranking. On the other hand, there is a six-month waiting period for orthopedic problems before you get coverage.
If you're concerned about having to fill out paperwork when submitting claims, you might be interested to know that if you use the Embrace mobile app to submit claims, you don't have to fill out any forms. Also, the company will reduce the deductible for each year that you do not file a claim.
The insurance policies sold by Embrace are insured by American Modern Insurance Group in Cincinnati.
Pets Best Insurance:
Pets Best Insurance offers an accident-only insurance policy as well as a policy that covers both accidents and illness. The accident and disease policy comes in three different tiers, with more expensive added coverage for veterinary exams, priapism, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. There is also a separate option to add coverage for routine or preventative care, including dental and wellness checkups.
The company's three-day waiting period for incident coverage is among the shortest companies in our review. The waiting period of six months for cruciate ligament coverage is longer for the companies included in our ranking. As with most of the companies in our ranking, pre-existing conditions are not covered.
If you use the company's mobile app to submit your claims, you don't have to fill out any forms.
The policies they sell are managed by Pets Best, and insured by the American Pet Insurance Company (APIC).
Healthy Paws Insurance:
Healthy Paws insurance provides pet insurance policies for cats and dogs that cover accidents and illness. There is no coverage available for wellness or preventive care. Like Trupanion, policies from Healthy Paws do not come with any type of coverage limit.
While there are many ways to submit a claim to Healthy Paws, if you use the website or mobile app, there won't be any claim forms to fill out. On the downside, if you want to register multiple pets with Healthy Paws, you won't be able to take advantage of any discounts on multiple pets.
Healthy Paws sells insurance policies written and issued by The Chubb Group.
Nationwide Insurance:
Nationwide Insurance offers accident and sickness insurance policies for cats and dogs as well as birds and other exotic pets, including reptiles, pigs, goats, and small mammals, such as ferrets, rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs. Wellness policies are also available for dogs and cats.
All companies in our ranking exclude pre-existing conditions, but Nationwide offers some exceptions. If your pet is deemed to have recovered and had no symptoms within six months, they may be eligible for coverage again.
However, there are two downsides to Nationwide, which are the policy rates and the maximum lump-sum life. Policies for cats and dogs have a maximum age of 10 years to enroll in a Nationwide policy, and the company rates them higher than many in our rating. Nationwide sometimes offers pet insurance discounts for existing home or auto insurance policy holders.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance:
The ASPCA Pet Health Insurance provides accident and sickness coverage for cats and dogs. It also provides coverage for horses, which is unique among the companies in the Best Pet Insurance Companies 2022 rankings. Policies for dogs and cats include accident and disease coverage, as well as coverage for congenital and hereditary problems, alternative treatments, and behavioral issues, including acupuncture. , physiotherapy, chiropractic care, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation therapy, and low level laser therapy. Cat and dog insurance also covers prescription medications and microchips, among other things.
One advantage is that the ASPCA allows you to add additional pets to your account to receive a 10% discount on each additional premium. This may be a cost-effective option if you have several pets. One downside of ASPCA pet health insurance is that claims take longer to process, taking up to 30 days to process.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is licensed by, and not affiliated with, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Its policies are insured by the United States Fire Insurance Corporation and operated by a subsidiary of Crum & Forster.
Figo Insurance:
Figo's cat and dog insurance policies provide coverage for accidents and illness. You also have the option to choose annual coverage limits, including the unlimited coverage option. Their policies may cover pre-existing conditions that are considered curable.
The Figo website states that most of its claims are completed in less than three business days. While veterinary testing coverage is not part of standard Vigo policies, it is available as an option.
Figo operates its own policies, but is insured by Independence American Insurance Company, Markel American Insurance Company, or Markel Insurance Company.
Fetch by The Dodo:
Fetch by The Dodo provides accident and sickness policies for cats and dogs. These policies include both physical and behavioral therapy and veterinary testing for covered conditions, but there are no options for wellness or preventive care coverage.
There are many discounts available, including for AARP members, active duty and military veterans, as well as veterinarians and their staff. There are also discounts on going no-claims and adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organization. Be aware that to renew your policy, your pet will be required to take an annual wellness test.
